Setup fails after "CONNECTING..." when trying to link Tidbyt to Wifi

Hi! I am trying to setup my Tidbyt for the first time. I am using the Tidbyt app on iOS to connect to the Tidbyt. I am able to login with my Apple ID to get to the Setup screen. I can connect to the Tidbyt via Bluetooth. Then, when I enter my Wifi password in the Wifi setup screen. The Tidbyt then says “CONNECTING…” but after about 30-45 seconds, the Tidbyt goes back to the Bluetooth connection screen, and the app still says “Connecting to Wi-Fi network”. My wi-fi network is WPA2 and does have a password, so not sure what is happening there. Any ideas? Thanks!

I actually figured this out but thought it might be helpful for some folks - it looks like my Tidbyt would only connect to a 2.4 Ghz network, so I moved far enough away from my dual band router to force Tidbyt to only see the 2.4 Ghz network to set it up. It was able to setup successfully, and I am now able to use it on my network.

@dantheman Glad you got figured out, and thanks for the detailed info! I’ll keep this in mind if we hear from other folks with issues on a dual-band network.

In theory, Tidbyt should not see or try to connect to a 5 GHz network at all since it doesn’t have any 5 GHz antennas or circuitry. But we’ll take a closer look.

This is an issue I’m dealing with as well. I can’t get the Tidbyt far enough to only see the 2.5ghz band - it fails to connect to the 5ghz and yes, it does see it

I use a mesh network that pushes both bands as a single network, so the Tidbyt should be able to determine which frequency it needs to sit on, but unfortunately it cannot.

How can I resolve this?

@BoogieTheTruth Unfortunately we haven’t been able to reproduce this error in the lab.

If you have some time, I’d really appreciate getting a download of the diagnostic data from your Tidbyt. That could help us narrow down the issue and get you a fix. It takes a couple minutes and requires a computer, but if you’re able to follow these steps and email over the data, I’m hoping we can figure out a resolution:

I’m having the same issue and it’s really defeating. I connected once out of the box and have never been able to do it again… not exactly loving this early adopter pain.

I’ve noticed a couple of things:

  • It doesn’t seem to care whether it’s a combined 5G/2G network
  • It doesn’t like a password with a ! (exclamation point) in it
  • Often when it loses power and restarts, it won’t connect. A full reset (with the blue button on back) will get it connecting again, though you have to delete the extra Tidbyt in the app and add all your apps to it again.

I was so excited this morning, but this is a bit of a buzz-kill. My Tidbyt finally arrived. It’s frigid outside, so I left it sit for a couple hours to warm up (not documented, but condensation can be bad). Downloaded the app in anticipation, created an account, and finally plugged my Tidbyt in. Rolling through setup to the wifi join… but I can’t get it to connect. I’ve tried a few times now, so considered that maybe I should check the support docs… come across this little gem: My wiFi password DEFINITELY has a ! in it - and with all the crazy smart home devices already attached in our house, I have no intention of changing the password just for Tidbyt after having just gone through this trouble a couple of weeks ago. :frowning:

Is this something that will be fixed? Why would the device impose such a ridiculous limitation?

Hey folks,

We’ve tried to test with a wide range of Wi-Fi routers and hotspots but unfortunately haven’t been able to cover every case. If you are able to send us the diagnostic data from your Tidbyt while it’s trying to connect, that should allow us to troubleshoot and get your device connected:

For what it’s worth, we have exclamation points in our Wi-Fi passwords here and that doesn’t seem to be the primary issue.

Happy to try, but I get “No Compatible Devices Found” when trying to click Start on the Console app. Using Windows 11 and Edge 96.0.1054.62. I see a CP2102N USB to UART Bridge Controller with a ! in my Device manager in Other Devices. Do I need a driver or anything?

Hmm, it should generally work without a driver. If it does require a driver, it would be one of these:

Let me boot up my Windows machine here and take a look. I’ll have a more solid answer then.

Yep! That was it. Immediately able to connect once installing the driver.

Awesome, thank you! Dissecting this now…

@mrwizardno2 Thanks again for providing this data! I just analyzed it and I’ll attach some technical details to the bottom of this message in case you’re interested. The main thing I recommend trying, though, is moving the Tidbyt closer to your Wi-Fi router.

Based on the log, it doesn’t look like there’s any issue with the Wi-Fi password or anything like that. Rather, it appears like the received Wi-Fi signal isn’t strong enough.

Technical details

Based on the log, the Tidbyt is able to authenticate with the Wi-Fi network. However, the connection isn’t strong enough to transfer data or receive an IP address. After trying for 30 seconds, it gives up.

Here’s the particular section where we see this:

That last number, RSSI, is the “received signal strength indicator”. The RSSI here is -76, and we need -70 or better for a good connection. So it’s close, but the signal is not quite strong enough.

Thanks @rohan . I managed to get the Tidbyt to connect when it was sitting ~6 inches from my Unifi AP. But when moving it across the room where its home will be I can not get it to connect. No other device on my network (through walls, concrete block, or otherwise) has this issue. They stay connected even when the signal is much worse. Is there a toggle for this behavior on the Tidbyt?

I thought I was having a similar issue but mine will not connect even sitting on top of my router. Any ideas?

@rohan, FWIW, the WeatherFlow Tempest hubs have this same issue. Some people have no issues with dual band networks with the same SSID and some do. I have Aruba APs and have had no issues whatsoever. Also, there are some APs with settings which kill the WF connectivity. I don’t remember what system they were but Eric on the WF forum has posted about it. My hunch is that the WF and Tidbyt Wi-Fi issues are related.

I’m having the same “can’t connect” then it goes back to bluetooth type of behaviour.

I’ve tried both my guest network and my main network. No dice on either. Tidbyt has never connected and I can’t get it set up at all.

Here’s my log:
